🕵️♂️ Incognito Mode Just Got a Privacy Upgrade - Here’s What You Need to Know
If you’ve ever used Incognito mode in Chrome (or InPrivate mode in Microsoft Edge), you’ll know it helps keep your browsing private by not saving your history, cookies or form data.
But was it ever truly private?
Not quite… until now.
🚨 What Was the Problem?
Let’s say you copied a bit of text, an image, or a link from an Incognito tab. You’d expect that to stay private, right?
But behind the scenes, Windows could still save that copied item in your clipboard history, meaning anyone could press Windows Key + V and see it later.
Worse still, if you had Cloud Clipboard turned on, that data could be synced to other devices too. Not ideal if you were copying sensitive info.
Microsoft Just Fixed It
Microsoft quietly rolled out a fix. Now, when you’re browsing in Incognito or InPrivate mode, anything you copy won’t be saved to clipboard history or synced across devices.
That’s a big win for privacy-conscious users 👏
🔐 What Else Does Incognito Mode Protect?
When you open an Incognito tab, your browser stops saving:
🗂️ Browsing history – so no one can see what sites you've visited
🍪 Cookies and site data – so sites won't remember you
📝 Form data – so no auto-fill next time
This is handy for things like:
✈️ Checking flight or hotel prices without getting tracked
👥 Logging in to multiple accounts without signing out
💻 Using a shared computer without leaving a trace
📺 A Bonus Privacy Update: Media Previews
Ever noticed a media preview pop up when watching videos in Chrome? Like on the lock screen or when adjusting your volume?
That could be a problem if you're watching something private – whether it’s a business video or something more personal.
Now, when you're using Incognito mode, those previews are hidden. Instead of showing video titles or artwork, it’ll simply say:
“A site is playing media”
No details, no thumbnails – just proper discretion 🙌
⚠️ A Quick Reminder
Incognito mode only protects your privacy on your local device. It won’t hide your activity from:
Your internet provider
Your employer’s network
The websites you visit
So, while it’s great for keeping things private on your screen, it’s not a cloak of invisibility online 🕶
